What is dental bonding, and what is it used for?

Sometimes called “tooth bonding,” dental bonding is a simple and affordable aesthetic dentistry procedure that involves applying composite resin directly to the tooth to improve minor aesthetic flaws, such as:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Discoloration
  • Imbalanced appearances

The Tooth Bonding Procedure

Before diving into dental bonding, our cosmetic dentistry team will take some X-rays and chat about your cosmetic dentistry goals. Suppose you have any underlying oral health issues (such as tooth decay or gum disease) that arise during your initial assessment. In that case, we must address these problems first to perform the procedure safely.

After qualifying for dental bonding, the Amigos Dental Care team can start treatment, which typically goes like this:

Our Salt Lake City cosmetic dentists deliver natural-looking results and match the resin to the natural enamel color before applying it.

Dr. Petersen and Dr. Tholstrom ensure that your dental bonding results last as long as possible. By physically etching the enamel and applying a conditioning liquid, they can help the cosmetic tooth bonding material adhere to the dental surface.

The resin is applied, shaped, and leveled in a uniform fashion.

After molding into the desired shape, our cosmetic dentists will cure the resin material directly to the tooth’s surface to stabilize the bonding material.

Once the dental bonding material has hardened, our cosmetic dental team will artfully polish and shape the tooth until it looks and feels natural.

Teeth that have undergone dental bonding do not require special care outside of general oral hygiene (such as not brushing, flossing, or scheduling regular dental exams and cleanings). However, we ask that patients not bite fingernails, chew on ice, or open items with their teeth, because the bonding material can chip.
