Children’s Dentistry

Not all dentists treat kids, but the Amigos Dental Care team opens our arms to all family members—including the smallest ones. Dr. Todd Petersen and Dr. Tad Tholstrom are Salt Lake City family dentists that take pride in keeping patients of all ages free of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health conditions that negatively impact the body.

What is children’s dentistry, and how is it different from general dentistry services?

Children’s dentistry concentrates on kids’ dental health from infancy to the teen years. From birth to adulthood, children grow at a rapid pace. So, kids’ dental care requires a different approach from general dentistry. General dentists focus solely on fully developed teeth and adult dental health problems. Children’s dentists have experience treating children with primary and mixed dentition (adult and baby teeth), as well as the patience to handle various levels of maturity and personality.

As a parent, it’s understandable to focus on your child’s overall wellness, but it’s essential not to overlook their oral health. Children’s dentistry is critical in developing and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Early dental visits and consistent oral hygiene habits can prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues, minimizing the need for more complex treatments. Also, proper dental care encourages good habits that will benefit your child for a lifetime.

A Warm and Friendly Dentist for Kids in Salt Lake City

A child’s first dental visit typically occurs between 6 and 12 months, soon after the first tooth appears or before they celebrate their first birthday. This allows our kids’ dentist to monitor their oral development from an early age. Children’s dentistry services support growing teeth and good oral health habits.

Until your kid’s next dentistry appointment at Amigos Dental Care, feel free to review our most-asked questions regarding children’s dentistry:

  1. How do I clean my baby’s teeth?

Brushing a baby’s teeth doesn’t need to be complicated! Sit them on your lap, cuddling them up close. Then, use water and a toothbrush designed for infants and gently brush with small circles, covering all the surfaces of those tiny pearly whites. We do not advise using fluoridated toothpaste until age 3. Helping kids learn healthy habits early ensures they stay happy and smiling for years!

  1. Is thumb sucking and pacifier use harmful to my child’s teeth?

If your little one is still sucking their thumb or pacifier past the age of three, it’s time to consult with a children’s dentist. While many kids naturally stop these habits independently, extended use can create crowded and crooked teeth, so don’t wait too long for intervention.
